Culture and Lifestyle in Vienna

Vienna has been many centuries one of the major centres of culture in Europe and contributed in the fields of classical music, fine arts, opera, theatre, waltzing and urban planning. During the long reign of the Habsburg monarchs, the city had an enormous weight in terms of economy, culture and politics in Europe. Many aspects of this influence are still kept today and the Austrian capital is a much desired tourist destination.

Vienna was home to many of the greatest artists and composers in Europe. Among the people born or residing here are Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss II and Franz Schubert, all of them raising prestige to the Habsburgs, but most of all, giving a precious heritage to music. Classical music is essential in Vienna today. The city is also a very lively new music centre.

The museums in Vienna are over 100 - big ones like the twin History of the Art/Natural History Museum and the fine arts collections in Belvedere, or small, unique and even weird places like the Museum of Art Fakes.

Vienna's architecture is a magnificent mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque palaces, churches and public buildings. The city has also numerous great examples of Art nouveau and in the last 100 years several modern buildings added more charm and splendour to the Danube pearl. Experimental architecture flourished too. Perfect example is the Hundertwasserhaus which is now a major tourist attraction.

The lifestyle of Vienna preserved the touch of aristocracy. The nobility of old loved jewellery, exotic goods, expensive perfumes and opera. The citizens of Vienna today make no exception – the opera houses are the greatest in the German-speaking world, the markets offer fine crafts and the Viennese cuisine is world famous.

There are many good hotels in Vienna, most of them reasonably priced. Check out the website of hotel Austria Vienna for the newest offers and packages.
