Food and Fun in France

To celebrate my husband’s 36th birthday, we took a trip to Paris, France. For us, it was the trip of a lifetime, and the lead up to our departure made it pretty clear why.

For me, an art history major, travel has always been about culture, history and art. I’d been abroad before, but somehow I’d never made it to France. All I could think about in the days leading up to our trip was the Louvre, the Musee D’Orsay, the Pere Lachaise and Versailles – all the wonderful museums and historical sites I would finally be able to appreciate in person.

Unaccompanied Minor

When I was a kid, I was a frequent “Unaccompanied Minor.” My parents, divorced and living in different states, often shuffled me back and forth between them. As early as age 6, I was flying on my own – and I’d easily earned my own captain’s wings by the time I was a teen.

The Travails Of A Traveling Liverpool Supporter

Lately, it has been taxing work being a Liverpool supporter. Our season started so brightly despite the fact that we were lacking our captain Steven Gerrard due to that recurring groin injury because our new signings in midfield and up front – Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing, Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll – had been purchased for an outlay of over £110 million and much was expected of them.

Accommodations Near Paddington Station

The area of London surrounding Paddington Station is one of the best parts of the city to consider making your base of operations while on a holiday visit. Paddington Station itself offers easy access to the rest of London, but the Paddington area has plenty to offer within walking distance. Just south of Paddington Station is lovely and historic Hyde Park, and Kensington Palace and Gardens - Regents Park is just a short cab ride to the northeast.

Accommodation in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is without a doubt one of the most fascinating old cities in Europe. The ancient Scottish capital is rich in history, but rather than merely celebrating its past, Edinburgh continues to live life at the forefront of contemporary culture. Nowadays the Edinburgh Festival is an event which draws in thousands of visitors each year, and is recognised throughout the world.

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel Edinburgh, then a good place to start would be in the city’s West End. Much of this district reflects a modern architectural style, and here you will find popular theatres, shopping centres, a couple of casinos and of course some excellent, designer hotels. This is also the best place to come for a meal out, with a wider choice of restaurants than any other district of the city.

Those looking to immerse themselves more fully in history and ancient culture however, might prefer to book a stay in the Old Town area of Edinburgh. Here the narrow streets form a labyrinthine pattern of cobbled alleys and passageways, often with one level built high above the one below. As well as a good range of comfortable hotels here, many of which occupy attractive, listed buildings, this is also a good area to look for discount accommodation – there are a number of good hostels and backpackers’ hotels available here, which will allow you to save significant money on your trip to Edinburgh.

Then again, if the main point on your agenda is to pay a visit to the city’s historic castle, then you will have no problem at all finding a good range of hotels near Edinburgh Castle. Book a stay at one of these, and you will find yourself within easy reach of the fantastic fortress which has overlooked the city since days of old.

Meeting in the Market: Corby and Braintree

The history of how the various English towns, villages, and the cities many grew to be is awash with fascinating details usually linked to important historic events, to politics, or because of physical geography. Of these, the market town plays a special part in understanding a wider swath of English politics and economics. For instance, the town of Corby, prospered and grew as a result of the market charter it was granted in 1226. Today, you can reap the benefits of this medieval contract and stay in a Corby hotel and explore the town’s heritage.

A Better Destination

Although Scotland is not well known for its sandy beaches, there are a variety of other resources available to aid one in having a relaxing trip. It is more than likely that you will not end up with an exotic drink in your hand while gazing out over the ocean, if you should decide to stay at a Ballater hotel, but you will have the opportunity to see first hand some of the most majestic surroundings known to man.

On a Mission

While backpacking across Europe in 2009, I was able to explore many of the hotels that the various countries offered. While I am not one that typically breaks the bank to stay at a fine luxury hotel, I had a very special occasion in the next few months that required me to locate a very special location.

The Scottish Seabird Centre of Edinburgh

The coast of Scotland is a haven for seabirds. If you are staying at one of the many Princes Street hotels Edinburgh has to offer, you will see only seagulls gliding on the wind above and perched on statues. However, just a short distance away is the seaside and offshore are the Isle of May, Craigleith, and the famous Bass Rock. Here gannets, puffins, shags, and cormorants gather to create what David Attenborough has called one of the “Twelve Wildlife Wonders of the World.”
