Best Transportation Options to London from Gatwick and Heathrow

"Here is a breakdown of the best ways to get from the two major London airports into the heart of the city, as well as why you might choose each option.
There are three categories: Budget (the cheapest way), Beauty (the most pleasant way), and Both (the best of both).

Heathrow

Budget: Underground
This will get you there for the least amount of money, but expect to be on the Tube for about an hour. Depending on the hour, the trains may be packed with commuters, so consider the size of your luggage. Buy an Oyster Card to save you money throughout your stay.

Beauty: Heathrow Personal Chauffeur Service
Book a ride in advance, and you won’t have to worry about your bags or where you are. Drivers are highly knowledgeable about the city, and so may know a faster or more pleasant route. They will be happy to pick you up or drop you off at the Heathrow Airport hotels if you choose to stay there.

Both: Heathrow Express
Zipping between Paddington Station and Heathrow every 15 minutes and arriving within 15 minutes, Heathrow Express is efficient and comfortable. The Heathrow Airport hotels’ staff can direct you to the station. Consider the Quiet Zone Carriage if you need some quiet for work or simply for sanity.

Gatwick

Budget: Bus
National Express bus line departs from Gatwick every hour and reaches London in around an hour and a half. The buses now accept Oyster Cards, so remember to invest in one of these and save money throughout your stay.

Beauty: Chauffeur Service or Car Hire
Travel alone simply trumps all. This is only for luxury travellers, though; rides between Gatwick and central London are long and fares are expensive. If hiring a car, consider that parking is available at Gatwick Airport hotel accommodation.

Both: Southern Service or Gatwick Express Trains
The duration is comparable: 30 minutes estimated for Gatwick Express, 35 minutes estimated for Southern Service. If you’re taking advantage of the Gatwick Airport hotel accommodation, use the National Express coaches to get you from the airport to your hotel."
